Bits and bobs in Astoria Oregon

Here's some more photos from our weekend, we went twice to The Astoria Coffee House and Bistro, for a delicious breakfast and lunch. Food was great, service was great, and it was darling too! It passed my three tests for a good eatery: Excellent bacon, savory mac and cheese, and creamy hot chocolate.
Our last day there we watched a pretty doe who had jumped the fence into the yard. It was pretty awesome to wash dishes and have a staring contest with a doe just feet away from the window.
On our way out of town we stopped at my favorite creepy old house, a beautiful Victorian that is completely in shambles. The trees, grass, and vines are so out of control you can barely see the house from the road. It's extra creepy that there's still things in the house, like curtains and candlesticks. As much as I would love to see it cleaned up, I love the mystery of it as is.

Saturday after a fantastic extra special photoshoot with Fab Gabs, Sam and I headed to Astoria Oregon for a little anniversary weekend at my brothers beach house. Sunday after a lazy morning and yummy breakfast, we drove to Fort Stevens for a WWII living history event, which I of course was super excited for. Unfortunately we got there just as they started packing up!

We did manage some pictures with the awesome people participating, who were so nice. and of course, looked amazing. The event is taking place again next summer, anyone who can go, should! I know we will :)

They seemed to like the way I was dressed, just as much as I liked their outfits, I felt so at home surrounded by like minded people, even if I am pretty clueless about military history, we share a passion for preserving the past in one way or another.

The fort itself is really neat, lot's of nooks and crannies to explore, and beautiful views! If anyone is interested, you can camp nearby, and there is also a beach not too far away from where we were, pictures of that later! Check out their schedule for more living history info.

Oh, and just in case you were wondering why my hair all of a sudden looks AMAZING, it's because it was professionally styled by vintage hair expert Kristen Behlings, for the photoshoot Saturday. It was so well done it kept up all the way through Sunday, I mean, she made it look like I don't even have bangs anymore! I highly recommend her if you are looking for a vintage hairstylist in the Portland area.

Pretty pinafore

I've wanted a 1940s pinafore dress for ages, but I'm too cheap to buy a repro, and all the patterns I find are super extra small. So I was very, very excited to find this darling dress in beautiful cream and baby blue, that fits perfectly! It was handmade, with pretty buttons all the way up the back, and hand finished buttonholes. One of my new favorites :)

Crazy chairs and kitty pizza (No not like that! ..sickos...)

Today after going to Portland with Twila Jean, I met up with my aunt and her girls, and we went to The Salmon Creek Farmers Market, for some fresh berries, and cupcakes!

Afterward we stopped at a park, that had a weird spinning chair, it would never stop spinning once I got on it! Giggles ensued.

And in the evening we made pizza, which I of course made in the shape of a kitty face. Meow!

Onion rings and raspberry pie

Today I made a raspberry pie with friends, using berries from a local farm, and pie crust my cousins and I made at The Pink House. But before pie time, we stopped at Burgerville for some yummy seasonal Walla Walla onion rings.

What a yummy day.

Stripes are evil and pretty

The other day at a local antique mall I found six vintage sewing patterns, for $1 each! Four from the 1940s, one from the 1930s, and one suit pattern from the 1950s, it's very Dior. And seeing how I fixed my sewing machine last night, I get to make something for the first time in weeks! So today Sam took me to the fabric store, where they were having a half off sale and I picked up this pretty striped searsucker. I have never worked with stripes, nor searsucker, and thought it would be a good idea to play with a chevron pattern in the gored skirt.

The result is a finished skirt on a Monday night, after a day of shouting profanities at the fabric, and beating a chair with a panel of mis-matched stripes. There was lots of seam ripping.

All in all the skirt turned out pretty cute, and hopefully I'll have enough fabric left over to make a little matching hat :)
