Day on the farm

Today Sam and I spent a much needed afternoon in the rural part of town, where cows are plentiful and old forgotten barns line the road. The weather was so beautiful, with romantic gray clouds all day, and warm, muggy air throughout. Felt more like the end of summer than the beginning of spring. We didn't really expect to go anywhere, just for a drive on a Saturday afternoon, but the scenery was too pretty not to take pictures. I'm glad I wore my farm dress, the country was just the setting for it, if there weren't so many fences I could have spent hours walking through the fields.

We also went to a wildlife conservatory and saw tons of beautiful birds in the wetlands. Ducks, geese, heron, hawks, and pretty little black birds with red shoulders. Not only were the bids a pretty sight, but the mossy, tangled trees were well worth mentioning.

On our way back home we passed an abandoned 1930s farmhouse and barn and I nearly jumped out of my seat. It was the stuff of dreams (well, maybe just my own), a forgotten barn and house that is stripped of paint and taken over by grass and moss, so much so that it's now almost part of the field. I can't wait to get out there and take pictures :)

Ruffles and polka dots

Today I ran away with the circus (and by "ran away with the circus" I mean I went to work and smiled awkwardly as people gawked and looked puzzled/concerned).

This is the jumpsuit I mentioned yesterday, isn't it cute? I spotted it in line to buy other things, didn't even try it on but knew I had to get it. It's not too warm out so I paired it with my backseam tights, but in summer I want to wear socks and mary janes instead. To continue the ruffle detail past the playsuit I "topped it off" with my little 30s ruffle hat, one of my favorites.

Are ties just for boys? Neigh!

When I found this tie at work I couldn't not get it. I mean, it's a hand painted tie of a horse with rhinestone eyes. Need I say more?

I come across interesting ties a lot and always pass them by, Sams taste in neckwear is pretty modern so until this one it never occurred to me that I could wear them. I liked wearing it so much I picked up another 40s hand painted tie with ducks on it today! I'll save that for fall though.

Twila Jean and I went to Portland today for some thrifting, of course she found some pretties for her shop, and I found some pretties for my closet! The duck tie, a 40s sweater, and a darling polka dot playsuit you are going to love.

1930s farm dress

Yesterday I was excited to finally be in a place to sew (all boxes unpacked, house is clean, and a day off). Lately I've been wanting something simple and neutral to wear, and all my spring frocks are rather bright. So I pulled out this yardage I bought a few years ago when I was working at a fabric store, and it was just perfect to pair with this much used 30s dress pattern. Including this dress, I've made four dresses from this pattern, and am looking forward to fashioning a black wool dress in the fall with long sleeves and a white collar, and little pearly buttons :)

But anyway, I was inspired to make it by watching Gosford Park a film that takes place in an old english mansion in the 1930s and revolves mainly around one of the ladies maids. She's so cute, very plain, very simple, but I still admired her style the whole film.

So I put together a dress that was just that: Plain and simple. Neutral colors with a basic design, but a few key details. I put vintage wooden buttons on the bodice, a matching belt, tie-circle pockets on the front, and instead of a zipper a side fastening of ten buttons and hand finished button holes.

The dress still needs a little fin tuning, I am going to take in the bodice a bit as it's a little billowy, which works on others but not me. But other than that I'm quite happy with the way it turned out, I think an old barn would make a great backdrop for it for photos.

Oh and the second picture is what my sewing area looks like when I'm not sewing, and the third is the machine ready to go!

Friday I found this dress at work and was quite excited. It has entire country scenes all over it! I'm not quite sure how to accessorize with it yet, in fall I'll pair it with these boots and a little cardigan I will somehow magically knit between now and then. But for now it's pretty minimal.

Waiting for spring

I tried to channel a bit of Alice today, it felt like one of those weird, dark days (gray clouds anyone?). I'm eagerly awaiting some sunny spring days where I can wear cotton dresses without jackets, and I found a darling striped sailor dress today at work I'm dying to wear, but it's definitely a warm weather frock. Sigh.
