Today we did a little bit of shopping, and went to the farmers market in Solana Beach. The top photo might look a bit familiar, since I've taken a picture in the same place the last two times I've visited, in March, and in October 2008.
We got some good produce at the market, and since our place has a little kitchen we made dinner instead of going out and braving the mothers day crowd.
We stopped at The Antique Warehouse where I was hoping to find a red bakelite bangle, and I did! I've been obsessing more and more over bakelite bangles lately, but seeing how I've never paid over 50¢ for one (at garage sales of course), I was unsure about actually getting into them and collecting. But the bug bit me, and now I've turned into one of those people that wear them by the dozens. My grandma said "Good thing you got another one, you're elbow was showing!" Hehe, grandma is funny.
The second to last photo shows them closeup, the top row is the real deal, and the bottom is just plastic, see the difference?
And I nearly died when I saw that kitty pillow. Seriously, best pillow ever. I usually don't take pictures in antique stores, people get mad at me, but I had to sneak this one. If it wasn't $325 I would have bought it :)

I DID find (actually my mom did) the most darling kitten notebook, with an amusing title. Oh Korea, what were thinking when you made this?

And then there's a random red stagecoach. Just because I can.

I want to give a big thank you to Twila Jean for lending me her camera lense on my trip, as mine has decided to stop working. Without her we wouldn't have such nice pictures! Thank you Twila!

California, day 1

I had a very Arrested Development themed day. I saw a stair car at the airport. We're staying in the part of California the show was set/filmed. I expected to see a lone model home on top of one of the dry hills. We passed UC Irvine. When we were ten minutes from Legoland my mother said "Ten minutes to Legoland!"

This is probably all gibberish to most of you, but I had to throw it in there. And seeing as I just found a website that shows places where it was filmed, I'll probably be going to those places, so watch it already!

Anyway, California is of course, lovely. I'm joining my mother, grandmother, and aunt for a week near San Diego, and the weather is so nice and warm!
The resort we're staying at is amazing, it caters mostly to families going to Legoland, so when we walked in the lobby we were greeted with movie popcorn, lego statues, and a man making balloon hats. It was pretty awesome. Aaaaaan, the pool is amazing. BOTH pools are amazing, there's a kids pool with all sorts of slides and fountains, and an adult pool on the top of a hill overlooking the ocean. It's quite posh. I will take pictures there in my 50s swimsuit and pretend I am a movie star, how could I not?

Our room overlooks a beautiful field of flowers with the ocean in the distance, and we're lucky, the flowers are in bloom right now! Everything is just so cute, right down to the tic-tac-toe tray on the coffee table, which I immediately turned into a bakelite bangle holder ;)

My mother wore a pretty pink dress, I took a picture of the petticoats she wore, and yes, my passport sleeve does match my outfit. I wouldn't have it any other way ;)

Roller girl

Today it was so nice out, and even thought I had a 9 hour workday I was in a great mood thanks to the lovely sun and of course a killer pair of white vintage roller skates. I spotted them as soon as I walked into work, and they were my size! I had absolutely no reason to buy them, but every reason to wear them most of the day. So yeah, I wore roller skates at work, what of it?

One customer commented that I looked like I'm part of a vintage delivery service, which I think would be just about the most awesome thing. Need a party dress pronto? I will roll it right to you. Although the only reason I didn't fall flat on my bum is because we have carpet at work, and soon as I stepped out on the pavement I was a lost cause. Hence my reason not to buy them: I might break an arm.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend ahead, I know I do, I'm going to California! For a whole week, sunny SoCal, so I hope you won't get sick of posts every day! I've packed some pretty cute things, including a little sailor dress ;)

Sam and I had a blogging conversation the other day.

Sam: "I write something, then think 'oh. I guess I have to post pictures too.'"

Me: "Thats funny because I post pictures then think 'oh. I guess I have to write something too.'"

So there. I wrote something.

Today a few friends came over and we made pasta by hand, without a pasta maker! We tried to make it pink, but it ended up being orange, then the color just boiled out anyway, but it was still yummy!

Yesterday was fried pie day!

I went to my aunts house in the afternoon and after dinner we all made fried pies. Fried pies are pretty much like pie filling in a folded pie crust, then fried in oil instead of baked. And they are soooo good. We used my great grandmother Lois's recipe, so of course it was wonderful, can't go wrong with a recipe thats been passed down generations.
Everyone participated, even little Dottie who is just learning to crawl. You can see some of my aunts kitchen in the photos, isn't it pretty? And that little pin up girl in the second picture is a bottle opener!

Update: If you want to try out fried pies for yourself, my Aunt posted the recipe here! Enjoy!

Sam I am

As a "fashion blogger" I get a lot of questions about my other half. Does he dress vintage too? Do you two coordinate outfits? How does he handle all your hats? Or for that matter, cats? (we actually don't have a cat, just lot's of kitty things).
I am lucky to have a husband that enjoys his own wardrobe. He doesn't have a whole lot of clothes, but he loves what he has. We are funny in the way that I, one one hand, will easily spend money on clothing, but cannot justify buying books. He, on the other hand can buy books but has to be persuaded to buy clothing. But the clothing he does have is quality, and stylish, and he knows exactly how to wear them. And it bugs him that men use the excuse of being a man to dress sloppy. So late one night, he decided to start his very own style blog! Sound familiar?

He named it Dapper as Hell because that's what he aspires to be. So if your a guy, know a guy, or would like to meet my other half, go visit!

On that note check out this picture I found yesterday at an estate sale, I couldn't pass it up. It's from the 40s, and the mix of guys in boaters, classic signs, and bowties was irresistible. Only after I bought it did I see the guy on the right wearing converse with his ensemble, how cute is that?
